When gearing up to ride your motorcycle, the most important piece of safety equipment you can don is a certified motorcycle helmet. It is well worth your while to purchase a quality helmet because you never know when you'll need it to save your life. But how do you choose the right helmet?
Get Fitted
Visit your local motorcycle dealer to get measured for a helmet. The staff can help you find one that fits snugly, making contact all around your head and face. In fact, the right helmet will be so snug that you shouldn't even be able to slip your pinky in between your forehead and the helmet.
Type of Helmet
There are four main types of helmets: half, three-quarter, flip up and full face. They offer varying degrees of protection from both the elements and impact. Whichever helmet you select, it should have a hard outer shell, an inner Styrofoam lining, a soft fabric lining and a chin strap for your protection. It's also in your best interest to select a helmet that has been certified by safety testing agencies such as the Department of Transportation and/or the Snell Memorial Foundation.
Helmet Features
Apart from basic safety functions, many helmets have additional features for your comfort and convenience. These can include, but are not limited to, face shields for better visibility, anti-fog coatings, internal sun visors, a ventilated shell for improved airflow, a removable liner for easier washing and a host of additional features that your dealer can explain in detail.
No matter which helmet you choose, remember that they are single-use items. After an accident, buy a new helmet even if your old one doesn't appear damaged. It's likely that the interior was compromised in the crash, reducing its ability to protect your noggin.
